Modifications
The Banner character:
The most significant modification to the original Hulk character is the concept of the scientist character who gets bombarded by gamma rays, as a result of a Gamma bomb going off prematurely. The fact that the character of Banner has gone through so many incarnations of his name has proved beneficial for the idea behind the Hulk universe. Being such a big fan of the TV show starring Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno I chose to use the name David Banner. We know from the later comics that Banner's father was named Brian, the 2003 film states that the father of Bruce Banner is named David (as a nod to the TV show). Since I'm keeping the David Banner name, I cant very have two David's. And so for the Hulk universe we will stick with Brian as the name of David Banner's father. This leaves us with the name Bruce, its actually kind of ironic that the name Bruce seems to a sore spot throughout the history of the character. As of yet there is no information on this character, he will have to be created from scratch.
Now lets meet the Banner's:
1. Dr. Brian Banner (David Banner's father, aka 1st Hulk)
2. Dr. David Banner (Brian Banner's son, aka The Hulk)
3. Bruce Banner (son of David, grandson of Brian Banner aka ?)
4. Jennifer Walters (David Banner's cousin, She-Hulk)
The origins of the Hulk character:
It should be remembered that the character of the Hulk is no stranger to having his entire history and origin story altered from time to time. Kenneth Johnson for instance changed the character's origin story for the TV show (1977-1982). Rather than being exposed to gamma rays during a botched atomic testing explosion, Banner was gamma-irradiated in a more low-key laboratory mishap. I would like to have yet another version of the Hulk's origins for the Hulk universe. The idea to have all of this come out as a result of roleplay, which I hope will take the idea in a completely new direction.
The limits of the Hulk's strength:
The television Hulk could take down bulldozers, punch through 10 foot reinforced steel in a matter of a few minutes, hold a car compressor (2-3 thousand pounds of pressure) with some strain, also punch and smash through concrete walls. This Hulk could also be hurt, injured or killed, but still retained a healing factor. The strength of the Hulk within this universe will vary depending on where he is. For those RPG' s taken place in the real world (on Earth) the Hulks strength will remain much like it is in the TV show (though perhaps a bit stronger). We will also be keeping the concept that the Hulk grows stronger the angrier he gets.
A word about fantasy:
Finally, despite its Marvel Comics roots, fantasy and science fiction themes were minimized in the TV series. There were no supervillains or references to the rest of the Marvel Universe. In the majority of episodes, the only science fiction element was the Hulk himself.
Even though I'd like the real world stories to be more like a traditional Incredible Hulk episode, at some point more fantasy elements should be brought into the more earth bound tales. As a way to connect the real world with the realm of exiles.
